IOP – Stabilization Outpatient Program

In the first phase, the client attends evening sessions four times a week, entering a stabilization period where the goal is a balanced life. If the individual is unemployed, he or she must seek employment during this time.

During this first 4-10 weeks of the program, the Stabilization phase includes the following steps:

  • Education on the disease of addiction
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Intervention (if the client is in denial)
  • Adoption of new coping skills to deal with everyday problems
  • Dealing with negative feelings (ex: anger management)
  • Relapse prevention
  • Education on the risks and dangers of HIV, AIDS, and STDs
  • Learning new nutritional habits
  • Introduction to Twelve-Step programs (such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon)
  • Receiving sponsorship in Twelve-Step programs
  • Locating a home group
  • Family involvement
  • Written task work
  • Life skills training
  • Corrective thinking
  • Referral to outside agencies, if other needs must be met

Before moving on to the next phase, the client must:

  • Remain clean and sober
  • Have completed all stabilization task work
  • Attend the required Twelve-Step meetings
  • Have a home group and a sponsor
  • Be invested in his/her recovery
  • Have a stable work history
