IOP – Stabilization Outpatient Program
In the first phase, the client attends evening sessions four times a week, entering a stabilization period where the goal is a balanced life. If the individual is unemployed, he or she must seek employment during this time.
During this first 4-10 weeks of the program, the Stabilization phase includes the following steps:
- Education on the disease of addiction
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Intervention (if the client is in denial)
- Adoption of new coping skills to deal with everyday problems
- Dealing with negative feelings (ex: anger management)
- Relapse prevention
- Education on the risks and dangers of HIV, AIDS, and STDs
- Learning new nutritional habits
- Introduction to Twelve-Step programs (such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon)
- Receiving sponsorship in Twelve-Step programs
- Locating a home group
- Family involvement
- Written task work
- Life skills training
- Corrective thinking
- Referral to outside agencies, if other needs must be met
Before moving on to the next phase, the client must:
- Remain clean and sober
- Have completed all stabilization task work
- Attend the required Twelve-Step meetings
- Have a home group and a sponsor
- Be invested in his/her recovery
- Have a stable work history
